The first correct method for starting a chainsaw is called the ground start.

You’ve probably seen it done on television and you may have even seen a few of your buddies or neighbors do the “airdrop” start. This is an extremely dangerous method and is not a recommended. An airdrop is when you drop the saw with one hand while pulling the starting cord with the other hand. The danger with this method is that the bar is completely unsupported and uncontrolled. DO NOT USE THIS METHOD!

The first correct method for starting a chainsaw is called the ground start. This method is good for first time chainsaw owners. First, place the chainsaw on the ground make sure that you lock the chain brake. Then turn on the ignition switch, and close the choke all the way. You also want to make sure that the guard bar’s tip and the saw chain are not touching the ground or anything.

Finally, carefully place a foot inside the pistol grip and wrap your hand around handle bar, then pull the starter rope with your free hand. It is not recommended for you to use your knee to hold the chainsaw down as your knee may slip off the chainsaw.

Another method for starting a chainsaw is called the groin start. This method is for use with small chainsaws only. Do not use this method with a high compression chainsaw, for it can cause serous injury. To use the groin start, engage the chain break, turn the ignition on, and make sure the choke is closed. Place the pistol grip between and approximately at the mid-point of your thighs, then clamped tightly. With one hand, you want to grip the handle bar tightly, then pull the starter cord with your other hand. Again, do not use this method with a compression chainsaw.

The last method for starting a chainsaw is called the sling start. As with the other methods, engage the chain brake and turn the ignition switch on, then close the choke. Next, rest the guard bar on any non-abrasive surface. Then placing one hand on the pistol grip, push the power head down quickly, while pulling the starter cord with your other hand. When the motor tries to start open up the choke all the way and keep pulling on the cord until the engine starts. A chainsaw that is well turned should only take about three pulls on the starter cord. However, as a chainsaw ages and becomes ole, it may take more than three pulls in order for it to start.

I prefer an electric chainsaw to a gas-powered one because it can sit for months or years and will be ready to use when you need it. This video shows you how to use an electric chainsaw. If there is a zombie apocalypse and you find yourself defending your home from zombie attacks with a chainsaw, the electric one can be problematic, as you mus protect the power cord, and you must have electricity to use it.
